Medium articles are primarily focused on a few broad topics — the top performers. This isn’t because those topics are what the platform founders intended for people to write about, but because those are the topics that took hold with the current audience. If you want to get paid for attracting new subscribers to Medium, then you need to be writing for a new audience.

When I started to take Medium seriously back in the summer of 2020, I tried my hand at writing for the audience already here, which was far different from the audience I saw when the platform first launched back before they sold memberships. I did okay writing for the popular topics, but not great.

If you want to get paid for attracting new subscribers to Medium, then you need to be writing for a new audience.

I know about business and entrepreneurship, money and investment, relationships and sex, but I don’t study these things enough to become an expert on them. I simply like them — most people do. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough material up in my noggin to write endlessly about these subjects.
